Current Lab Members
-
Sarah C. Crews, PhD
Arachnology Researcher
Sarah’s research focuses on terrestrial arthropods, primarily spider evolutionary biology, although I occasionally dabble with insects. I am mostly interested in flattie spiders – pretty much every aspect of their biology – and dictynoids.
-
Franklyn Cala Riquelme, PhD
Postdoctoral Researcher/ Curatorial Assistant
Franklyn’s research focuses on systematics and biogeography of Caribbean salticid spiders, and the evolution of morphology in marranoid spiders.
-
Maddy Hannappel, PhD
Postdoctoral Researcher
Maddy holds an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology. Her research focuses on using spiders to monitor environmental contamination and the transfer of contaminants from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems.
-
Jacob A. Gorneau
PhD Student Researcher
Jacob is currently a PhD student at the California Academy of Sciences and UC Berkeley working on using museum collections to understand arachnid evolution, conservation, and biodiversity.
-
Eric O. Stiner
PhD Student Researcher
Eric is currently a PhD student at the California Academy of Sciences and Open University. He researches everything from insects to mammals and he hopes his projects will further conservation biology efforts locally and in at risk ecosystems across the globe. He is also co-founder of the nonprofit conservation organization Islands & Seas which is currently based in San Juanico, Mexico, where much of his current work is based.
-
Amin Al-Jamal
MS Student Researcher
Amin is currently a MS student at the California Academy of Sciences and San Francisco State University. His work revolves around the taxonomy and evolution of small mesh-web weaving spiders from Madagascar, Australia, and elsewhere in the southern hemisphere. He is primarily a traditional morphologist, using imaging and scientific illustration to describe species and help uncover the tremendous biodiversity of this group
-
luigie d. alequín
MS Student Researcher, Islands 2030
luigie is currently a MS student at the California Academy of Sciences and San Francisco State University. His research is focused on phylogeography of arachnids the Lesser Antilles.
-
Prakrit Jain
Undergraduate Researcher
Prakrit is currently an undergraduate student at the University of California at Berkeley. His research is focused on Vaejovid scorpions, specifically the systematics, biogeography, and ecology of Smeringurinae. He is currently working on a scorpion curation project supported by the California Institute for Biodiversity.
-
David Canseco Vielma
Undergraduate Researcher
David is currently an undergraduate at the University of California Riverside. He has researched spider systematics and biomechanics, and he is currently working on community-driven biodiversity research in Baja, Mexico.
-
Daniel Martinez
Undergraduate Researcher
Daniel is currently an undergraduate at San Francisco State University. His research focuses on leaf litter arthropods in areas that have experienced wildfires. His research is supported by the California Institute for Biodiversity.
-
Emilio Chavez
Undergraduate Researcher
Emilio is currently an undergraduate student at the University of California Berkeley. His research focuses on developing methods for metabarcoding scorpion regurgitate. He is currently working on a scorpion curation project supported by the California Institute for Biodiversity.
-
Germaine Del Valle Mottershead
Undergraduate Researcher
Germaine is a senior at University of California Berkeley studying Genetics and Plant Biology, and a researcher in the Department of Arachnology at the California Academy of Sciences. His interests include biodiversity genomics, bioinformatics, education and interdisciplinary studies. His research focuses on the relationship between traits and evolutionary time in marronoid spiders.
